THE HISTORY OF SHALER VILLA VFC

Following the conclusion of World War II, Shaler Township experienced a dramatic housing boom. Recognizing the growing community’s urgent need for enhanced fire protection, an ambitious group of men and women united with a shared vision. Demonstrating extraordinary commitment, many of these pioneers mortgaged their homes to raise the funds necessary to secure a plot of land in the Campbell Plan. On this site, they constructed a modest two-vehicle garage, laying the foundation for what would become the Shaler Villa Volunteer Fire Company (VFC).

As the community and the fire company grew, so too did the demands for improved resources and expanded operations. The members quickly realized the need for more substantial fundraising efforts to support their mission. This led to a bold plan: constructing a larger garage on the same site while repurposing the original garage into a social hall. This expansion marked a pivotal moment in the company’s history, enabling them to accommodate a growing fleet and provide a communal space for fundraising and other activities.

Shaler Villa VFC began with a single truck and a determined group of dedicated volunteers. Over the years, the company invested in advanced equipment and welcomed many new firefighters, solidifying its reputation as a vital asset to the community. While Shaler Villa is fondly remembered for its EMS services from years past, its legacy continues to evolve.

Today, Shaler Villa VFC boasts an impressive fleet of vehicles, including Truck 262, a 2005 American LaFrance 75-foot quint; Engine 262, a 1995 Seagrave Pumper; Squad 262, a 2022 Ford F450 upfitted to serve as a multi-purpose unit; a 2021 Ford F350 which now functions as 262 Utility. The latter serves dual purposes as a Quick Response Service (QRS) vehicle and Incident Command unit. The company is also preparing for the replacement of Truck 262 with a 2026 Pierce Ascendant 107' Single Axle PUC Ladder Truck. Specifically designed to further expand upon Shaler Villa’s capabilities, this new apparatus represents a significant investment in the company’s future readiness and operational capacity.

Shaler Villa VFC actively seeks new members to sustain its operations and expand its services. Whether you’re interested in firefighting, EMS, or another form of community service, there is a place for you within the company. Those with EMS training are especially encouraged to join and contribute to the QRS team.

In 2018, the company embarked on an exciting new chapter by launching a Swift Water Rescue initiative. In response to the increasing frequency of flooding in the region, four members began training to become certified Swift Water Rescue Technicians. This venture represents Shaler Villa’s dedication to adapting to emerging challenges and enhancing its capabilities. Through collaboration with other public safety agencies, the team is prepared to address water-related emergencies with professionalism and expertise.

Shaler Villa VFC takes immense pride in its top-rated facilities and encourages community members to visit and learn more about their operations. Open 24/7, the company is steadfast in its mission to serve the residents of Shaler Township and beyond. As a predominantly donation-funded organization, contributions from the community play a crucial role in sustaining their life-saving services. Every donation, large or small, directly supports the fire company’s ability to protect and serve.

With a storied past and an eye toward the future, Shaler Villa Volunteer Fire Company remains a cornerstone of the community, driven by a shared commitment to safety, service, and innovation.
